They want this to be illegal

The TSA document I mentioned yesterday has raised quite a stir (via an IM from son James). They want to make it illegal to post the document.

This reminds me of a story about a psychology professor who asked his students to write down on a slip of paper and put in an box short phrases marketers had used that made the students one to buy a product. He then drew them out of the box to discuss them. The first one out of the box was “Under 17 not admitted without parent or guardian.”

They don’t want people to post it and they don’t want you to have it. What do you think that is going to accomplish?

Yeah, I thought so too.

Get it here if you don’t already have a copy.

  1. Showing that the TSA has nothing to do with security once again.

If it is already out there, and we make posting it illegal, are we going to treat it as kiddie porn as well and make it illegal to view?

If it is already out there, how many times will it be copied in the next 6 months before the bureaucracy can make it illegal?

If it is an outdated version anyway, what is the harm?

If the TSA says that this is an administrative breach only and it doesn’t affect our safety, then why make a big deal about it?

If the manual says that we are going to do extra profiling of Cubans, North Koreans, and Libyans, wouldn’t it also make sense to do some extra scrutiny of people from countries who have a track record of attacking us: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.?

IF (and that is a big if) the TSA was about security, then they would have kept tight lipped about this in the first place, not acknowledging whether the manual was authentic or not. Then quietly behind closed doors they would completely re-write their manual and SOP. Of course, if the TSA was about security, the manual would have never found its way to the internet. Thousands of companies are able to keep secrets (formula for Coke, Colonel Sanders secret blend) and they don’t have the backing of people with guns either.

Of course, I could be wrong since I don’t currently and never have worked in the security industry.

  2. All three of the upset Congressmen are members of the Stupid Party. Way to take a stand against the BOR, guys. I despair that the Stupid Party is too far gone for redemption.

  3. Amen to what ka said. When I buy noxious chemicals, be they for my truck, or for housecleaning, I always look for the statement, “This has been found by the State of California to cause you to turn green and shrivel up into a desiccated crumbling skeleton.” I’m paraphrasing, a bit.
