Quote of the day–Ben Franklin

…a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles…is absolutely necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty and keep a government free.

Ben Franklin
[It seems to me that the frequency of recurrence has been more than a little bit low. Even if we went to our fundamental principles right now it would be approximately 140 pico-Hertz and I’m thinking it should be more on the order of 12 micro-Hertz.–Joe]

  1. “God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion… What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.” –Thomas Jefferson

  2. 12 micro Hertz, or more than twice per year? Yeah, that should work. Or is my math off? Interestingly; if you divide it out into years, you get a sequence- 0.3805175038051750380517503805175… Which happens to repeat the phone number of a professor at the Institute for Mathmatics and Scientific Computing. at The Karl-Franzens University in Graz, Austria.

  3. I think your math is off. There are 3600 seconds in an hour, 24 hours in a day. That gives you 86400 seconds in a day.

That should be enough of a hint to get the final answer.

  4. The 12 micro-Hz part I got pretty quickly. But it took me a couple of minutes to get where you were going with the 140 pico-Hz part. At first, I thought I’d typed something into the calculator wrong. Then I realized I just hadn’t carried it through enough unit conversions. 82671.95 didn’t make nearly as much sense as “226.5” did.
