Quote of the day–Russell Long

Tax reform means don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree.

Senator Russell Long
[I’m pretty sure I’m the guy behind the tree. Not including sales tax, gas taxes, ammo and gun taxes, vehicle licenses, etc. we paid over $55K in taxes last year.–Joe]

  1. If tax was a sexual act it’d be either:
    a) Illegal
    b) Immoral
    or c) The kind of loving a cell mate in prison would give you.

  2. Don’t you know? After Democrats have been complaining bitterly and sarcastically about the Bush tax cut and vowing to let it expire, Obama has promised to cut your taxes. According to the Whitehouse it’s going to be the biggest tax cut in the history of the universe, and it’ll really, really help you a lot.

  3. We’ll see. The last time I heard something about that he was going to raise taxes for people making over $250K to eliminated the deficit. That wouldn’t hurt us directly. But the problem, IIRC, was that even if he took 100% of the money people made over $250K it wouldn’t eliminate the deficit. To eliminate the deficit they would have to take 100% of everything people made over $70K. That would hurt.

  4. Hey Joe,

    To quote my old Econ 101 teacher in college school, “In this nation every ones taxes are to low, except for mine”. I have found that to be a very true statement. I did taxes for 15 years and every April 15 we would have these folks come in expecting us to run around like chickens with our heads cut off on April 15. We just put them all on extension and had them pay in 110% of last years tax, that way no penalty’s or interest compounding.

    Either way the liberal ones (at least for that day) would bemoan the terrible defense budget that they were forced to pay for. The conservative ones would bitch about how much money we just gave away to welfare cheats or how huge goverment had gotten. I would always ask them both, well did you vote last year and almost everytime they would say “no”. Or say “whats the difference”. We used to call these people “political for a day”.

    Here is something that was emailed to me about guns. I can not say whether it is all true because it was a forward by a friend. But I thought one of you might know more about Australia.

    Subject: Fw: Interesting: Australian Gun Law Update
    From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

    Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the now available data from Down Under. It has now been one year (12 months) since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

    The first year results are now available:

    Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent;

    Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;

    Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent);

    In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent as compared with the last one year period when private ownership of a firearm was legal.

    (NB: the law-abiding citizens did turn i n their personal firearms, the criminal element did not and thus criminals in Australia still possess their guns.)

    While data for the 25 years preceding the confiscation of privately owned guns showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months as criminals now are assured their victims will be unarmed.

    There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

    Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in ‘successfully ridding Australian society of guns.’ This story of well intentioned government intervention in the rights of lawful individuals to own and possess firearms won’t be seen in the mainstream US media or on the American evening news, Senator Obama who advocates a similar confiscation in the US will not be reporting any of this to you.

    But, the Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

    Americans may want to take note before it’s too late!

  5. Miles, Thanks for the info on “political for a day”.

    The Australian gun stuff is about 10 years old and somewhat misleading in it’s presentation. I’ve seen it many times…
