More on wearable sniper detectors

Saturday I mentioned some sniper detection devices designed by the Brits. It turns out the U.S. Army ordered $10 million dollars worth of them:

QinetiQ North America’s Technology Solutions Group, a global developer of innovative technology solutions for national defense, today announced a $9.95 million order from the U. S. Army’s Rapid Equipping Force (REF) for SWATS(R) Soldier-Wearable Acoustic Targeting Systems. Part of the Ears(R) Gunshot Localization System product family, SWATS(R) soldier-worn units will be deployed to U.S. Army troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan this year. The deployment is expected to be completed by early next year.

A brochure and other info are here.

I wonder if it would crash if it were placed down range at Boomershoot when the opening horn was sounded.

  1. Now THAT’s funny. The fool thing would likely go deaf at the first reactive target .. er.. um.. activation.

If the processing did not crash at the start, I imagine “clean-up” might stress it past its capabilities.

Has anybody considered that some firecracker strings set off in a couple of non-sniper positions would likely make it unworkable – kinda like flares for heat-seeking missiles?

Sort of makes you wonder how it responds if the wearer(s) is an active shooter, like a soldier…?

  3. If it is designed like I would have done it it’s not based on the muzzle blast. It is based off the supersonic crack of the projectile. This will get you direction. However, I don’t know how to get range from that. Perhaps the muzzle blast is used to get an approximate range.

What this means is that firecrackers, active shooters, and “activated reactive targets” aren’t going to affect it the directional information. Subsonic rounds on the other hand should defeat it.

It wouldn’t be too hard to build such a device. But my use for it would be entirely for recreational purposes.
