Quote of the day–Ry Jones

Some anti-fun maroon stuck together a video to demonize recreational explosives. Joe’s daughter, Kim, appears in the last quarter of the segment. Too bad the anti-fun maroon is a TV station in Atlanta.

  1. What bothers me the most is how this is made to seem like some sort of federal problem that requires our masters to come in and straighten our little bottoms out.

Like Ry said, this is a self correcting problem. I’m tired of the ‘government’ constantly trying to tell me to live my life wrapped in US Approved Bubble Wrap.

  2. I am not a lawyer disclaimer and all that.

I have heard that in these situations the normal procedure is to bill them the going rate (whatever that is) for use of copyrighted material.

As they can not un-broadcast it they owe you for it’s use, as the owner of the video. At least that is how I understand it.

You could also ask, them to remove that portion of the video from their site. If they refuse I suppose you could get a court to order them to do so.

Pretty crappy of them to just to taking what they want without permission. Of course I am convinced that they misunderstand the 1st amendment. They seem to think “freedom of the press” means they are a special class of people, and, above the law.

  3. I am a lawyer, but not an IP/copyright lawyer, so take this for what it’s worth, which is $0:

this might be an opportunity, if it looks like you have their nuts in a wringer, for you to “magnanimously” accept as a settlement a broadcast interview with you giving you an opportunity to counter the earlier story. Of course, that also opens up possibilities for the reporter to really try to make you look like a fool, since there’s little chance they’d give you final edit rights or veto control over the interview. All right, maybe that’s not such a good idea.

  4. Heh… Good thing the snowman destruction vid isn’t up.

    What jerks.

IF you were to do an interview, I would suggest you emphasize your regular inspection visits by the alphabet people, your local manufacture, use and supervision of use.

This is perhaps an opportunity to push back on the GFWs.

It is also possible that you could scare the !@#$ out of them…

I like the idea of charging them the going rate for their blatently commercial use of the vid. And with it on the web, the “meter is running.”
