Quote of the day–Dwight Eisenhower

Every step we take towards making the State our Caretaker of our lives, by that much we move toward making the State our Master.

Dwight Eisenhower
[My guess is that this year there are only about two or maybe three presidential candidates, none of which are likely to win, that even have a glimmer of this fundamental truth.–Joe]

  1. I think that Fred Thompson “gets it” and has a reasonable chance (that is why he is getting some of my meager funds). I am sure that he gets this:

“The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”
    – Ronald Reagan

Tangent – I think it would be cool if Fred made an event of going to the Range with one of his weapons and did some shooting. The topic of course would be the bill of “god given” rights (as he puts it). Perhaps he could make a target of a copy of the McCain/Feingold crap bill that he voted for – an indication of his thinking about one of his few mistakes.

Can you imagine him as the Prez. going to the range with his Secret Service detail? Heh…
“Don’t even think about trying assassinate me, I carry.”

I like the sound of that. Come on Fred!

  2. I say they all know it, and that is exactly why they are offering to make the state our Caretaker.

I haven’t seen Fred handle a gun except for one photo from a gun show in which he seemed to have bad handling habits. I’d be pretty surprized to see a really competent Shooter-Fred at the range. That wouldn’t matter much to me however. I’m tired and thoroughly suspicious of “gun-handling photo ops” from politicians anyway. It’s how they legislate, how they appoint, and how they veto that matters.

  3. Thompson almost for certain gets it. But I put his chances of winning, at this point, at about 10% or less. Paul gets it and has even lower odds.

I haven’t looked at who the Libertarians are pushing but I imagine whoever that is will get it but of course has essentially zero chance of winning.
