Bummer

That was a stupid thing to try. Still, it’s sad when someone goes to jail for a victimless crime:

A Nevada man was charged with attempting to smuggle in parts of a World War II-era submachine gun by hiding them inside a Porsche he was importing from Germany to the Port of Long Beach, authorities said Wednesday.

Peter Scharf, 43, of Henderson, Nev. was arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles Tuesday after being charged with smuggling and importing a machine gun without a license, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said.

  1. Garrantee that he was “narced” out by someone he involved in the process of buying, breaking- down and hiding the parts.

  2. Automobile accidents kill approximately 40 thousand people every year (though this has been going down) and they injure or cripple many more, yet observe the difference in punishment one would expect for driving without a license, compared to collection the “wrong” type of firearm without a license.

I myself was nearly killed driving to work this morning– because of a driver who had insufficient winter driving skills. He spun out on a corner, went broadside, over-corrected, and crossed into on-coming traffic (me). I saw it coming, took what limited evasive action was possible on ice, and he missed me by an inch. Closing speed: 90+ MPH.

I have never been threatened, or come close to danger, from any sort of firearm mishap, and I’ve done a lot of shooting, both alone and with lots of other shooters, nor has anyone I know been harmed or threatened with a firearm (unless you count a cut finger) yet I’ve known several people who were killed or seriously injured in auto accidents. I bet the same goes for most anyone reading this. Drive without a license and you get a slap on the wrist compared to what happens when you possess the “wrong” gun without a license.

And don’t talk to me about criminals. The law doesn’t effect them, else they would not be criminals.
