For the good of the people

Socialism is for the good of the people, right? It’s not right for the rich industrialists to own the means to production. So the enlightened thing to do is for the people to own it. At least that is the way I understand it is supposed to work. So now we get this from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who is nationalizing the oil, banking, communications, and electricity:

In his speech, he said he will ask the Venezuelan congress to allow him to rule by decree, a power he enjoyed for a year in 2000-2001. Last month, the 52-year-old president said he would seek to change the constitution to end presidential term limits.

So in this case it’s for the good of Chavez instead of “the people”.

Socialism–The Road to Serfdom. In this case they are becoming the serfs of Hugo Chavez.

  1. Just by coincidence, I just purchased the 50th Anniversary Edition of “The Road to Serfdom” with a gift card I got for Christmas. I haven’t quite made it through the introduction and prefaces, and it’s already interesting.

  2. I just can’t believe people allow themselves to become sheep. Where I work at there is a Canadanian lady. We use to discuss how her goverment worked, medical care, school system and others facets. I tried to explain about liberty and the right to choose for yourself. But it is no use she bought into it hook line and sinker. I don’t even try anymore to changer her mind. It started to get a little uncomfortable and I don’t want to to there at the work place so I just left it alone. But yeah I can see how people who are desperate fall for socialism.

  3. We will now begin to see the Venezuelan oil, banking, communications, and electrical industries stagnate and begin to come apart at the seams. The most capable engineers will pull out of the country if they can, leaving the more ignorant to try to maintain the infrastructures (Chavez had best start building walls to keep people from escaping the country). Capital investment will overlook Venezuela in favor of more friendly states. The “Little Guy” will of course be the most adversely affected.

Same story different verse. A little bit louder, a little bit worse.

And our restrictions on oil drilling in the U.S. are supporting Chavez to the tune of billions.
